MR SMITH AND THE HOUSE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—l am sorry to have to appeal to you again to draw your and your readers' attention to the unfair and untruthful reports of your Parliamentary correspondent. I have to do so in self-defence. In reporting the resolution I moved when going into Committee of Supply re the Royal Commission, he winds vp —" There was no discussion. On the motion being put the noes were loud and decisive." Now, what are the facts of the case ? They are as follows: Mr Reos seconded the motion, and made a splendid speech, but to allow the House to go into Committee of Supply before half-past 12 o'clock, no further discussion took place, by an arrangement Tlie resolution was not put by the Speaker, owing to a misunderstanding. No one voted yes or no; but the Government have made such arrangements as will meet the case without the Royal Commission swallowing up the grant. By publishing the above you will give the truth, and tend to counteract the untruthful report of y^ ur Welliugton correspondent on Parliamentary matters. When I read your papers and his reports, it niakeß me weep to think how your readers are humbugged. In complying with my request you will oblige me. — I am, &c, E. Metcalf Smith, M.H.It. [Mr Smith's correction and the account we gave of the matter seem to us to be very similar. The Speaker made no mistake in not putting Mr Smith's resolution, for the motion for the House to go into Committee of Supply was carried in a very emphatic manner—Ed. jT.Z/.]
