For Judge Edwardrf' there were Messrs Harper Chapman and Theo. Cooper. Sir R. Stout_ opened the case, outlining - the arguments he intended to rely on, and then proceeding to sketch the constitutional history of the position of judges, which occupied the morning. Briefly put, he contends that Judge Edwards was appointed Commissioner of Native , Lands, together with the power of a Supreme Court Judge, and th it - the tenure of one office was to be determined by the other; consequently, having ceased on March 31st to be a Commissioner, Mr Edwards also ceased to be a Judge. Further, he argues that if the Commission went beyond the terms of the contract with tbe Government it could be rescinded, and he will endeavor to show it does so go beyond thecontract. -
