POLICE COURT. THIS DAY.
Monday, May 18.— Before C. C. Kettle,
Esq., R.M.
Breach of Game Laws. — William Fussell was charged with shooting a pheasant at Waiongona on May 2, without having a gun license. He pleaded guilty. Defendaft stated that he had got leave to shoot on the particular land for four years, and on this occasien he was going up to obtain further leave as the old term was up, when a pheasant rose, and he shot it. He was not aware he was .doing wrong. — Sergt. Duffin stated that defendant had been shooting for years, but as far as he could learn he had only taken out, a license once, and that in 1887. — Defendant asked His Worship some questions, but His Worship replied that he was not there to advise defendant. — His Worship said it was perfectly useless to inflict a nominal penalty in a case of this kind. A nominal fine would be no punishment to a gentleman in defendant's position, and he would therefore inflict the same fine in his case as he inflicted in a case that had previously been brought before him, namely, £5f and cost £1 9s. His Worship added that a person in defendant's position should take out a license; and if defendant came before him for another breach he would fine him double the amount. The Court rose. , '
