MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT.
The first of a series of muusical entertainments was held in St. Mary's schoolroom on Friday night. The attendance was large, and the net proceeds, which go towards the school building fund, were, therefore, satisfactory. It is expected that a sum of about £6 will be netted. The programme that was drawn up by_ the promoters was an excellent one, comprising song, instrumental items, readings, and several splendid tableaux, whose effect was heightened by colored lights. The entertainment opened with a pianoforte duet by Misses Florrie and Annette Webster, who played nicely. A tableau "Fairy Scone from Midsummer Night's Dream " was most effective, tho dressing and grouping of the children being artistically carried out. The vocal quartette, "There is Beauty on the Mountain" by Miss Hamerton, Miss I. Hamerton, and Messrs King, and Lightfoot, was given with effect; the parts being nicely balanced: Mr Macdiarmid gave a most humorous "and pathetic reading entitled^ 1 How wo Ch'o^e our Parson." 1 Mr Holdfiwrorth was ii\such good voice that he had to respond to an encore for, " Knight of Old " A pianoforte solo by Mrs r 'Malone was played in that correct manner for which the lady is noted. Anothor tableau from Tennyson's "Dream of Fair Women" was highly effective. lhe figures represented were Cleopatra, Jephtha's Daughter, Helen, and Iphigenia, Fair Rosamond. Miss Montgomery gave the reading from the poem. ' Miss Hamerton scored in the song " Alia Stella Con&dente" (with violoncello obligato by Mr F. Richmond), and had to respond to an encore. The second part was opened with pianoforte duet. " Diabelli's duet in D," by Misses Fookes. A tableau in two acts, "Mary and her four maidens," which first showed Mary Queen of Scotß'in prison, and secondly at the execution,' was beautifully arranged. Mr King was in good voice, and did justice to " Thy Sentinel Am I." Miss Yates sang "My mother bids me bind my hair," in a pleasing manner. The comic tableau, " Walls have ears,' took well. Miss Hamerton and Miss I." Hamerton, and Messrs King and Lightf eot were heard to advantage in the quartette " Spring with fairy foot returning." Mr Fookeß was encored for the Bong "The Gold Diggers." Mrs Hursthbuse sang '*Dream Faces" most effectively, the words being illustrated by tableau. The concert was carried out by Miss Hamerton, assisted by Miss Montgomery, Mrs Hurst- ' house, and others.
