It was always a question whether or not the ironsand coast attracted the compass when the vessel was near* the land. He never made an allowance for current or ironsand. By Mr Standish : He had been out of his course about 3 times since he had the Takapuna which was a period of two years. He had mentioned this peculiarity on this coast, but had never made a formal report about it. Bad steering would account for the steamer going off her course. It was noc his experience that the wheelmen and officers on watch were apt to grow careless in fine more so than in rough weather. A number of other questions were asked by the Court and counsel, and the enquiry adjourned till 2.30 p.m.
Sir Harry Atkinson and Captain Eussell arrived at Auckland from Sydney by the s.s. Manapouri to-day (Tuesday). *Sir George Grey has gone on a visit to Melbourne. . Mr Duncan Ross, the world renowned champion all-round athlete, and Captain Churchward, of the 6th Bengal Lancers, arrived in town on Monday evening. It is their intention to give an exhibition hero on Saturday afternoon of feats of strength, wrestling, and equestrianism. Full particulars will be published as soon as arrangements for a ground have been completed. '
