Policeman Billy M — was called upon to testify in the case of a man he had arrested for stealing a pair of scales. "You say, officer," said the 'court, "that you attested the "prisoner 1 in J the act of stealing a pair of scales, and he got away ?" ( "Yes, yer vraship, that's it," said Billy. " You recaptured him at once, I suppose?" "I didn't have to, yer wuship; I had him." " But yon say hegbt away ?" " That's it, yer wuship." , : , ■ "Then you mußt have re-captured him, as you have him here in court." "No, yer wuship. I had him all the time." " Then who did recapture him, sir ; will you answer me that ?" * "No one recaptured,. him» yer wuship — no one had to. No one has to recapture any duffer, after I git my hooks on to his collar. I'd like to sea the cove as could git loose — " • • "But you say he did get loose!" thundered the court. ' " No, yer wuship, I said he got a weigh — Bee? a weigh; a pair of scales! You get onl Pretty near as good as some of .your own jokes, eh ?" And one judicial humorist was temporarily ciwshed.
