ONE POUND NOTE ISSUE.
A committee of bankers will confer with the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the matter. The Statist asserts that the Bank of England will issue £1 notes, and appoint country banks issuing agents, on condition that they lodge consols with tho bank, and also that gold displaced be remitted to the bank. Tho Statist adds that there is a widespread distrust in the city at so very large an amounc being locked up, and serious difficulties are likely to prevail.

The Spectator, referring to the Federation Convention in Sydney, considers it started badly, and that it was a fatal mistake to have allowed the representatives of the Press to be present. A financial panic has occurred in this city, and a yreat run was made on the provincial bank. The Government and private merchants are coming to the assistance of the bank. LATE FATAL RAILWAY OOLLHION. New York, March 7. Mr Channcey Depew, one of the railway magnates of the United States, aud other directors and officers of the Railway Company have been arrested in connection with the collision which took place between trains in a tunnel on the New York railway on February 20th, resulting in the death of several passengers.
CANADIAN BLKOTIOMS.
Ottawa, March 7. At the elections Sir John Macdonald has secured a majority of 35. The seaboard electorates strongly supported the Government, while Ontario and Quebec were almost equally divided. The two Ministers who were defeated, Sir Richard Cartwright and the Hon. Wilfred Laurier, have been elected for another constituency.
