POLITICAL GOSSIP IN WELLINGTON. WRIT FOR EGMONT ELECTION. Thursday, January 29.— The writ for the Egmont Seat was issued on Tuesday, being returnable on 7th of March. WITHDRAWING RUNS. At the Executive Council meeting on Wednesday morning, two runs in the district, one in Shag Valley, two ' in Roxburgh, and one in the Cheviot, which were advertised for sale for a term of years by by the late Government were j withdrawn, aa the Government propose to offer a part of them in small grazing runs, and the remainder under settlement' con- | ditions. • " : j « TWO SESSIONS IMMINENT. 1 The Law Officers of the Crown are of opinion that supplies are granted till the end of June. -The special clause tacked on to the Appropriation Act of last year was only to ensure the summoning of the present Parliament not later than April, and if Mr Ballance now wishes he can ask for five months' adjournment without requiring further supp'ies. The opinion is daily growing stronger that there wi'l now ' be two sessions. OPPOSITION LEADERS. Mr John Bryce and Mr Rolleston havo been appointed by their party as leaders of it. it was decided on Monday, at a meeting of the Independent members, that a Committee should bo formed, to consist of ' five, of which the two named should form part, who were to call tho party together when necessary, and act for the members who now form tho Independent and Liberal section of tho House. There will beno'trial of strength until .the financial policy of the Government has been brought flown. ABOLITION OF PARTY MEMBERS. Members interested in the abolition of party Government and the adoption of a modified form of the Swiss system met on Monday to consider what course they • should adopt. This party is said to be about 30 strong, -and' their position has been materially strengthened by the reduction of the number of members to 74. NATIVE MINISTER. Mr Cad man has accepted a seat in tho Cabinet, and will have the. portfolio of Native Minister and charge of Charitable Aid and Hospitals. He was sworn in this morning.
