HARBOUR BOARD. THIS DAY.

The Harbor Board met on Wednesday. Present: Messrs T. King (Chairman), Shuttleworth, Corkill, Paul, Connett,. Godkin, Mace, and Kyngdon. Harbor Soundings.— A letter was read from Mr S. Weetman, Chief Surveyor, stating that he had received instructions to discontinue the quarterly soundings of the harbor. ' * ' Wants.— The Harbormaster wrote asking for certain things needed at the breakwater, among which was a" shed in which to put the tug Moturoa.— The Chairman stated they would have to- look after their funds carefully. First of all they would have to repair some holes in the mole, which would cost £50 the foreman estimated, and besides there were the expenses of the election of members! to the Board which was close at hand. , With reference to this election he hoped that, the members wonld see their way to stand again, and that the public would understand that a contested election was not desirable on grounds of economy. — Mr Connett said, it was a mistake to have a contested election, and if others stood, some of the present members could stand asido. — Mr Ktngdox also stated that it would ,be nndesirable to have any competition in the election, as the Board could not afford to incur the expense of a contested election. 1 — The Chaibman replied that he. hoped the public wonld view the matter in the' same light. They were all desirous of making the best of things, and the business of the Board had to be carried on by someone. If was only to save expense that he would like to see the election uncontested. — The. subject thon dropped. — It was decided to pro--vide a shed for the tug Moturoa when funds are in hand. I

Permission. — It was decided to grant Mr Old field permission to remove a small portion of the railway at the end of the wharf in order to enable the crane to lift the wreckage recovered from the Hawea.

Foreman's Report'. — The" foreman reported that during December the dredger lifted and carried to sea 1275 yards of sand ; that there had been no more serious damage to the breakwater since his last report ; that two sections needed repairing before next winter. It was decided to attend to the repairs. Auditing. — The Board decided not to pay £12 6s 8d to the Audit Department until the Board's accounts were completed by the Departmenffor 1889. Accounts. — The ordinary accounts were passed for payment. • The Board adjourned.
