During ilio month of December rain fell on 17 days to the depth of 6*52 inches. The average temperature during the Bamo month was 66*04. ' Wehavo had sent us a copy of the Financial Observer and Mining Herald, a "weekly journal written solely in the interest oH investors," and published in London. It is £ mosi ext^or Jinary publication. It ia as f uJL of libels "a 8 a Christinas pudding is f nil of plums." Hero is a Bainplo of one of the notices :—": — " Any investors who have been swindled by the two city thieves. Harry H. Marks and Edward Beai , ckhei* by correspondence or by puffery ia tbeir investors' swindle traps — the Financial News and the Financial Critic — or through the medium of any of the bogus long firm branches ran by these scamps ami their confederates, •are requested to send particulars in confidence to Mr C. W. Perrynifen, of this p per, who will enforce restitution of stolea moneys as he has done before." Here is another sentence : " The Financial News, •with its blackmailing and other defrauding proclivities of its editor and proprietor-in-chief Harry Thief Marks, and his lackey Arthur Fence Cohen, has become a terror in the City of London." Here is the heading of an article, "Two City Ihieves, the Financial Neva and the Financial Critic" Amongst its " Answers to Correspondents we find the following : — "Victim (H. O. Dniikwater).— lt is quite true he sailed on Thursday last for America, because he found the strings were tightening round his throat. . His acquaintances, as well as friends and relations, are all 'in the cart,' and a sorry tale they tell of his thieving and unscruEulous deeds. We shall be for ever after im." Altogether it is a lively paper, and Is quite amusing reading. As showing how ruinous has been the fall in the value of property in Dunedin the following case recently heard in Dunedin proves :— The case was brought by the widow of the late Mr G. M. IJobertson, formerly a merchant in Dunedin, afterwards one of the proprietors of the distillery which was established .there, and more recently of Waimea Plains.^ tiy the marriage settlement £5000 in cash was placed in the hands of Messrs Haggitt, Howilen, and Larnach as trustees for Mrs .Robertson, with power to invest it and pay the income to that lady. Mr K. L. Stanford purchased a property at Blueskin, Waitati, for £5400 and .afterwards erected buildings costing over £3000. The trustees on this security lent £4000 at 7 per cent. Within the last few years the trustees have had to take the property over, and it has been impossible to let it except at a nominal rental. The income having become materially reduced Mrs Robertson brought ah action against the trustees to recover the loss made. In referring to property in this colony, Justice Williams said : — "Now, looking at the enormous fall which has notoriously taken place in the value of property in the colony during the past few years, it would be entirely unreasonable to presume from the mere fact of a loss having occurred that a breach of duty had been committed. Nothing is easier than to be wise afier the event, and the somewhat difficult- task imposed on the Court is to endeavour to place iteeJf in tbe position of the defendants at the time of tbe investments and to consider how men of ordinary prudence, but destitute of the prophetic gift, would have comported themselves under the circumstances." His Honor held that negligence .'.ad not been established, and judgment was given in favor of the trustees. 18 DEAFNESS INCURABLE? J. H. NICHOLSON, of 175 William-street, Melbourne, has proved otherwise by making a complete cure of DEAFNESS AND NOISES IN THE HEAD OF OVER 40 YEABS' STANDING by a simple remedy and without the use of any " clap trap " no called electro-medication treatment A full description of this remedy, wbfoh has cured thousands of other cases of long standing, will.be sent FREE on application
