Mr Teed's The Orphan won the Opunake Handicap, and paid £2 19s of a dividend, and his mare Sinus won the Opua Stakes, dividend £2 4s, and ran seconoUin ,the Flying Handicap, being beaten by a head only, uy Javelin; The OrphgD.,, and Sinus are both by The Australian? Vhose stock appear to be springing into ncominence this season. Moonraker won the Hurdles, and Mr J. V. Dingle's Rainbow by (The Dauphin) won the Harakeke stakes.

Mr H. J. Goodman, agent for the Imperial Fire Insurance Company, has forwarded to us a very useful and neatly got up writing portfolio, with blotting paper inside. On the outer cover is au almanac for the present year, land inside it is a quantity of very useful general information, such as mail services, postal and telegraphic rates, New Zealand stamp duties, wages table, and interest ready reckoner. — A fifth consignment of plant for the Petroleum Workß arrived at Wellington on Tuesday by the Kaikoura, and the sixth and final shipment is on board the Doric, due in the colony about 12th inst. It is expected that the arrival, of the Kajkoura's goods will enable Mr Booth to start boring toward* the end of next week. In, order to afford the public! an opportunity of inspecting the works when in active operation, and at the same time to assist two of our deserving local institutions, Mr Cdrkill proposes to have two '/ open days " a Saturday and a Monday — so soon as the machinery! is working, smoothly, when a small charge will be made for admission, and the proceeds divided .between the Hospital and the Recreation Grounds.
