[FROM OUR OWN OOItUESPONDENT.J December 8. — The election excitemont has subsided, and the Government being in a minority, the absorbing queston at present is whether the new Parliament will be called together, or whether the Premier will resign and refer the Governor to Mr Ballance to form a Government. Sir Harry's victory over Mr McGuire was purchased dearly. The Premier's friends were so fearful of his defeat that a large number of them, who were residents in Now Plymouth and Waitotara with property qualification in Bgmont, forsook their districts and voted against Mr McGuire, thereby, as events proved, actually securing the return of two Opposition candidates, Mr Smith for New Plymouth and Mr Hutchison for Waitotara. It is really astonishing to think how far reaching the effects of this action proved, for as the defection of voters from Wanganui became known in Wanganui, numbers there, thinkj ing Mr Carson's chance of deposing the Opposition leader was a remote one, journeyed to Waitotara and voted for Mr Bruce. What must have been their chagrin to find Mr Ballance returned by 26, and, notwithstanding their aid, Mr Hutchison by 22. The logical conclusion appears to be that to keep Sir Harry in, three Ministerial supporters lost their election. At present there is a dearth of amusements The Rev. Charles Clark lately delighted us with his " New Dickens' Lecture." A great drawback attached to residence in a country town is the few opportunities afforded of hearing any of the world't real artists, and when a ohanoe oflwi od9 would »xp«ot tho ouliund oj
intellectual classes to avail themselves oJ it. I regret to say that it is not so here— the bucolic mind is only agitated witl matters concerning markets, and one oi the world's most eloquent lecturers is onij greeted by a meagre attendance.
