ARRIVAL OF S.S. MATATUA.
MATATUA ANCHORS OFF WAITARA.
| FROM OUR SPECIAL REPORTER.] THIS J3A.V. The s.s. Matatua arrived from Dunedin this (Wednesday) morning, passing the town at half-past 11 o'clock. When the steamer passed the breakwater she was saluted, and the ensign dipped to her.
The s.s. Matatua anchored oil tho Waitara River, close in. A largo crowd of people assembled there, many coming from town.
Tho work of putting tho sheep in the punt was pioceedofl with rapidly, tho carts taking the carcasses from the freezing chamber across the ro.id to the punt, into which they arc shot with rapidity.
A great number of men are employed to ensure expedition. The punt went out as soon as loaded — about 1 o'clock. It will take till about Friday to finish loading the Waitara portion o£ frozen meat for the steamer, as there are several thousand carcases to be shipped.
An endeavor will be mado to make two trips a tide.
