BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Borough Council met on Monday evening. Present : His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Pookes, Dockrill, Small, Cottier, Goldwater, Collis, King, Corkill, and Cock. Fire Insurance. — A letter was received from the Sydenham Borough Council re fire insurance. The clerk was instructed to reply that this Council is not in a position to support the Sydenham Council's scheme. Alteration of roll. — It was agreed to place Mr C. D. Solo's name on the burgess roll in the place of Mr Shoolbred. — A similar request from Mr C. E. Bellringer to have Mr G. Rock's name placed on the roll in lieu of his own was acceded to. lief und. — An application for a refund of water rate was received from Mr Armitage ; it was decided that the Council could not entertain the claim. I Fire Brigade Demonstration. — The Secretary of the Fire Brigade wrote asking permission to use the Borough water ! supply and for the loan of a quantity of pipes for the Firo Brigade Demonstration proposed to be held during the Jubilee week. It was decided to give every | possible assistance to the Fire Brigade. Street Deviation. — It was decided to forward Mr W. J. Shaw's plans of the proposed deviation of John-Btreet to the Education Reserves Board for their approval. Street Watering.— Mr E. M. Smith's I letter asking for extra remuneration for street watering was referred to tho Waterworks Committee for their report. Sanilaiy Matters. — Mr O. Samuel, the Borough solicitor, wrote expressing an opinion that it was legal for the Council to enter private premises to inspect,- and to take steps to compel owners or occupiers to remove nuisances, and to keep their premises clean. Considerable discussion ensued, His Worship the Mayor and Messrs Corkill, Dockrill, Collis, and Fookes taking part. The mattor was allowed to drop on the understanding that the Inspector should visit certain places complained of, and take the necessary steps to remove the nuisances. An Extraordinary Request. — Mr Webber wrote informing the Council that he intended to extend his fence on sec 983 to the corner peg which was in the centre of the approach to the Liardet street bridge, and asking the Conncil either to remove the bridge to the centre of the road, or to post a notice that there was no throughfare for vehicles. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. Sanitary Inspector. — The Sanitary Inspector reported that the sanitary conj dition of the town was very fair with the exception of a few places where refuse water was allowed to drain into the I street. Public Woi'ks Committee. — The Public Works Committee reported as follows : That the plans of the Colonial Bank be approved of subject to the usual building ?egulations ; that Mr W. Brooking's application for a drain from his premises in Brougham-street be acceded to ; that with regard to Mr J. C. George's letter the Council will remove the debris of the tree, but acknowledge no liability. The report was adopted. Waterworks Committee. — The Water works Committee reported as follows : That Messrs Paul and Sheppee's water engine is of the Batne power and dimension as Mr Fischer's, and will be rated as laid down in the Waterworks by-law ; that Mr King be allowed to connect with the Borough water the same as other residents on South Road ; that Mr E. M. Smith be empowered to employ a man to assist him in lowering mains in Morley-streot ; that a one-inch main be laid in Victoria Road from the present main to the Borough boundary ; that the charge for water to the Henui Tennis Club be Ireduced to 30s for the current year. Tho question of extension of main to the borough boundary on Victoria Road was referred back to the Committee, to acertain the difference between the coat of a one-inch and a three-inch pipe. With that exception the report was adopted. Leasing Reserve*. — An informal application waß received for a lease of a portion of the Institute Reserve ; on the motion of Mr Small, seconded by Mr Corkill, the matter was referred to the Reserves Committee for their report. Committees for ensuing year. — The following Committees were elected to serve during the ensuing year : — Public works, with which will be amalgamated the Waterworks Committee, His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Cock, Collis, and Small ; Institute, Messrs Dockrill, Corkill, and Goldwater ; Fire, Messrs Cottier, Fookes, and King ; Reserves, Messrs Small, Corkill, and Goldwater ; Library, His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Fookes, Dockrill, and Cock; Estimates, His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Fookes, Cock, and Collis ; .Health, > His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Corkill and Cock ; Cemetery, Messrs Cottier, Goldwater, and Corkill. Messrs King, Dockrill and Cock were appointed to sign cheques. Alteration of by Law. — In accordance with his notice of motion, Mr Fookes moved for a Committee, to consist of His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Collis, Corkill, and the mover, to consider the Borough by-laws with a view to amendments. Seconded by Mr Dockrill and carried. A Refutation. — At the [request of Mr Small, His Worship the Mayor, refuted certain statements referring to Mr Small, which were made in a letter appearing in the Daily News on tho eve of tho last election. Accounts. — Accounts amounting to £243 6s 6d were passed for payment, including £35 for interest on loan. The Council then rose.
