THE COLONIAL STRIKES.
ATTEMPTED SETTLEMENT OF LABOUR DIFFICULTY. Sydney, September 18.— The Mayor has drafted a scheme for the settlement of the present labour dispute on the basis of arbitration, and proposes that the question be referred to a Board of Arbitration, consisting of the Mayois of Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, and other gentlemen possessing the confidence of both sides; His Honor Sir F. M. Darley, the Chief Justice of New South Wales, to be chairman. NO CONFERENCE POSSIBLE. One of tho representatives of the employers states that the manifesto recently issued by the labour party only proves that the matters at issue are so varied as to preclude any possibility of a Conference on the question, and that nothing can be done until the employers publish the terms on which they are prepared to engage labour. THREAT TO BOYCOTT OCEAN STEAMERS. Adelaide, September 19. —Tho decision of the men to boycott ocean liners affects eight lines of vessels. MELBOURNE EMPLOYERS' MANIFESTO. Melbourne, September 19. —The employers have issued a statement that, with a sufficiency of free labour, under a pledge of continuous employment, and with gloomy trade prospects along the coast, it would be misleading on their part to offer the Unionists any conference with a view to arranging terms by which the strikers might be reinstated in their former positions. Such a course wrs practically impossible, and the most that could be done at that stage would be to state that all tho men required would bo employed, irrespective of whether they are Unionists or free labourers.
