HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board met on Wednesday. Present: Messrs Bellringer (chairman), Hurley, Davidson, Corkill, Malone, Heslop, J. Elliot, T. Elliot, McGregor, and A. Bayly. Charity Conference. — A letter was received from Dr. McGregor, InspectorGeneral, enclosing extracts and reports regarding the desirability of holding an Australasian Conference on charity on the lines of those that had proved so successful in America. He wished to know in what light tho Board viewed tho matter. Sapportim Parents.—The Secretary rej ported on the question of W. Lander supporting his parents.—ln was decided that W. Lander enter into an agreement to contribute 2s 6d per week till further notice. Kirkwood's Lase —Mr Moore, Secretary of the Opunake Town Board, wrote acknowledging receipt of letter granting Kirkwood 5s per week, and stating that this was not enough for a sick man to support a wife ami family on. Ho suggested temporary relief to the extont of 15s per week.—The Board decided to grant 10s per week temporarily, and to get the police to make enquiries. A Bequest.—J. Bulfe wrote under date September 16 asking the Board to lend him £6, which, with E4 he had in hand from friends, he intended to start ropemaking. He said he would pay the loan ofE at the rate of £1 per month.—Tho consideration of the letter was postponed till next meeting. Waipuku.—The Hainwright family, of Waipuku, on the representation of Mr W. Peattie, had their allowance increased to 10s per week. Old Men's Home.—Tho Board decided, "That a committee, consisting of tho ' House Committee, with Mr Corkill, be appointed to go into the question of re arrangement at the Old Men's lief uge, and report at the next meeting of the Board." —The members were of opinion that a change was necessary at the Refuge, in order that the institution could be conducted on a more satisfactory footing than at present.—The members of the Board, after adjournment, paid a visit of inspection to the .Refuge. Dispensing Question.—Mr Hurley asked leave to withdraw his notice of motion bearing on the question of doing away with the present dispensing staff, and getting the same done by the surgeon and matron. He said that on enquiries he had found out that the change could not be very well effected at present, and, therefore, he would ask leave to withdraw the same.—Leave was granted. House Commit' c's Report.-*-The House Committee reported as follows on the question referred to them at last meeting of reducing the charitable aid by 10 per cent. :—" That having gone carefully through the weekly allowance issued to chaiitable aid recipients, we are unable to discover how the reduction proposed is to be made without inflicting severe hardships upon those now in receipt of aid, as, in our opinion, the amounts now received are nothing more than a bare pittance, and the only way in which we think a saving can be made is by the Board in all cases enforcing the law with regard to liability of responsible relatives." Mr Davidson moved, and Mr Heslop seconded the adoption of the report. Mr Hurley moved as an amendment, M that 10 per cent be deducted from payments of 2s 6d and upwards." Mr Corkill seconded the motionprofovma. On being.put, the amendment was negatived on the voices, and the report was then put I and adopted. Haicera County.—The Hawera County Council forwarded a cheque for £77 0b 6d, being their amount of contribution due. An Account Due.—Mr Adlam waited on the Board with respect to an account of £9 12s owed to the Board by Olga Byork for maintenance in the Hospital. He stated he would pay £5 in settlement of the claim.—The Board, after taking the circumstances of the case into consideration, decided to reduce the account to £7 4s. Night Patient—Mr Cobkill made an explanation übout the admission of a night patient into the Hospital.—Tb.9 question was referred to the House Committee for enquiry and report. Accounts.—Accounts — Hospital, £103 5s 7d; Charitable Aid, £64 0s lOd; Hawera Cottage Hospital, £18; travelling expenses, £5 18s 8d —were passed for payment. The Board adjourned.
