AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY MEETING. THIS DAY.
Tn.E annual meeting of the Taranaki A. and P. Society was held in the Borough Council Chambers at 2. 30 p.m. on Saturday. Present: — Messrs Olson, vice-president (chairman), Bewley, H. J. Honeyfield, A. Davidson, A Kyngdon, C. W. Govett, R. Street, H. Newland, C. K. Stock, H. Okoy (secretary), A. J. Hoskin, E. Marfell, and others. Committee's Meeting.— At a Committee meeting which was held before the general meeting, it was decided to pass a vote of thanks to tho Borough Council, for the permission acceded the Society to use the Council Chambers for holding meetings. The Committee also discussed the question of holding an Autumn Show, and it was considered that a stock and produce Show should be hold at Jubilee time. The consideration of this question was, left over for the general meeting to decided. Balance-sheet.— The secretary read a Balance-sheet for the period ending August 28, which showed that the Society had £2 4s 8d in hand, and 19s lid to credit at the Bank. The Chairman pointed out that this Balance-sheet did not compare favourably wjth the last at sight, but in reality it wrts a better one. For instance the last balance-sheet showed a creditfor £6, whereas there was a liability of £15 9s lOd, for printing, standing. Therefore there was really a deficit instead of a credit lost year, and this year they had an actual credit. It would therefore be Been that the balancesheet just read was much better than its predecessor.— Tho balance sheet, as read, was adopted. Vote of Thanks. — In accordance with the recommendation of the Committee Mr Kyngdon moved, and Mr Bewley seconded, a vote of thanks to the Borough Council for the use of the Council Chambers. Farmers' Defence Union. — A letter was received from Papatoitoi, Auckland District, stating that a Farmers' Defence Union had been formed there for protection against Trade Unions, and to further and look after tho farming interests generally. The letter suggested a local Union, and co-operation. — -The Chairman thought that the forming of a Union here was premature. The Defence Union at Papatoitoi had, he believed, been started as a set-off against a Farriers' Union, that had been formed there. The farriers in this district always treated them fairly.' They had enough at present to look after the running of the Agricultural Society, without adding extra work by starting a Farmers' Union. He held that it was time to start a Union when they were foiced. — Mr Newland suggested that no Union should be started, as "the d n thing (Unionism) was getting too contemptible." — On Mr (Jovett's motion, it was finally decided to simply acknowledge the letter. (Proceeding as we went to press.")
A painful accident happened to Mr J. H. Norris, clerk at the Morley-'street Goods Shed, this (Saturday) morning. Tho engine, which left the town station at 11 o'clock for the breakwater, was shunting at the Morley-street sheds, when Sir Norris made an attempt to get on, but in doing so he slipped'and hisjeft foot .was, run over by ,one- f 6f ' the engine- wheels. The big toe was'Ua'dly injured,- arid' Mr Norris had to be tttßen home. Dr Christie was at once summoned to attend the- sufferer. It will not te necessary to amputate the toe, but theinjnry to it is serious: ■
