At "the Haymarket, on Saturday, pigs Bold at rather low prices, slips making Is to 4s, small stores 8s 6d to 15s. Few hacks offered, one trap horse making £7 10s. Fruit trees and shrubs sold at rather low rates.
At the mart fowls made 8d to Is 3d, good ducks Is lid, turkeys Is lid. potatoes 3s 6d, seed do 4s 6d, onions id to l£d, -wheat 3s 3d, oatmeal 3s, sugar 3d, soap 6s 6d, hams 3£d to sd, bacon 3d, tea 13s 6d. Sundries and furniture made fair pnees. Fruit — During the week Hobart apples made 10s to 13s, according to condition. No oranges in the market. Cattle.— The Stratford yards were full on Tuesday, a very nice lot of -young steers being yarded. Bidding was brisk, and most of the pens were quitted. Several lots of steers went home, vendors anticipating a further rise. Prices offered were very much in advance of late rates. Calves made 8s 6d to 15s, small 6s, j'earlings 20s 6d to 255, 18-months steers 28s to 355, 2£years steers 53s 6d to 545, 3-years £3 2s, 18-months mixed (rough Jot) 275, 18montha to 2-yeara heifers 28s, store cows 35s. — On Wednesday I held a clearing sale at Mr MSicfie's farm, near Opunake. There was a very large attendance of buyers, and bidding was exceedingly brisk. The dairy cows were unfortunately in rather low condition, and many backward .calvers would have sold better ; taking this line as a whole, they were cheap. Cows (springing) made £2 15s to £3 17s ' 6d, in calf from 35s to £2 10s, in milk £2 to £2 15s, bull £3 10s. Store cows, horses, and sundries sold at very advanced, rates. Mixed cows and Galves 295, calves 128, fat cows £3, 18-months heifers 26s to 28s, 15 to 18-months steers 375, buggy ponies £12 5s the pair, draught horses £15 to £20, partially broken £10 10s, Woodlands £10 10s, 2 to 3-yeare unbroken geldings £5 ss, hacks £4 12s 6d to £6, buggy £22, separator £50, horse gear £16 10s. — At Rahotu the following day I had a large muster of cattle, but bidding was quiet, and many lots went home. A dairy of cows of good quality made only £2 to £2 15s, 18-months to' 2-yeays heifers 21s, calves 12a 6d, cows (fresh) £2 14s 6d, empty heifers 38s, bullocks £8 per pair, calves 10s 6d to 12s, store cows (good) £2. Produce. — No reliable quotations can be made, owing to scarcity of tonnage occasioned by the strikes. At the moment butter is easier, but any hour may alter consideiably.
