Agent for Old Judge cigarettes and Waterbury watches. — John Avery, wholesale and retail tobacconist, New Plymouth, — Adv, There are at the present time a large number of Indian hawkers wandering about the country in Victoria, says a Melbourne paper, and cases are reported where they have extorted money from women, besides seriously frightening them. A case of this kind recently occurred at Eddington. Mrs L'anyan, jun., heard footsteps in the kitchen, and thinking it was her husband she opened the bedroom door, when she was terrified to see one of these Indians, who at once seized her by the arm. Mrs Lanyan succeeded in making her escape, and ran to the residence of her father-in-law, about half a mile distant. I The police were communicated with, and the Indian and another of his tribe were traced to Laanecoorio. It was found that they were not in the possession of hawker's licences. They were both arrested and will be dealt with at the Dunolly police court. The Sydney Daily Telegraph has no belief in the silver boom lasting, and lecotumends those mines already opened up to smelt every ton of ore in sight and sell up every ounce of Bilver obtainable. Opening up a mine may be very interesting work JLroia a mining manager's point of view, but in the majority of cases more smelting and less mining wo aid pay the shareholders better. When the 'Bilver boom ' bursts there will bo as little profit in working most of our diver deposits as there is now in working our copper mines.
