MOA ROAD BOARD.

This Board held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, August 27. Present: Messrs A. Bishop (chairman), Atkinson, A. Baker, R. Langley, Mathews, Whitehouse, Surrey Horrocks, and Peters. ' The following letters were read: — From Messrs Jones, James Hill, Tarplee, Corbott Burket, Westmacotr, Evans, and BuckleyLand Board, Taranaki County Council' Bank of New Zealand, Colonial Secretary's Office, Mr Marchant, M.H.R., General Survey Office, Wellington. From C. and W. Leech re erection of bridge on Bristol Road. The Clerk stated that tho Bristol Road was £5 in debt. Mr Leech said that all the settlers he had spoken to were willing to pay interest on any money that might be borrowed for the purpose of tho erection of the bridge. The Clerk was instructed to ask the Minister of Lands if the road had power to borrow money on the strength of the deferred payments and perpetual leases. Mr Horrocks produced two large pieces of metal which he took from the Junction Road, and which had been passed, ho sup. posed, for 3 inch metal. It was moved by Mr Horrocks" That in future all spreaders of metal should be employed by the Board " Mr Whitehoub-e thought' that the County Councd plan should be adopted by theMoa Road Board— that is, to have the metal broken in heaps on the site, and passed. Ihe Overseer was instructed to see the man who is spreading the metal on the Junction Road, and instruct him regarding the size of the metal. The secretary was instructed to inform Mr. Westmacott that he must write to the County Council, re the taking over the Rimutautaka Road, and thtt the Moa Road Board will have no objection to alter the boundaries. Mr Mattock attended tho meeting to ask if a track could not be made to his sectioa ?? n * to® .^PPor Road.— The Chairman informed Mr Mattock that there were no funds for the purpose.— Mr Mattock said he woald like to know what money had been spent on that part of the road for the past ten years. v *fr LL 3 a^ gley^, yed ' and was seconded by Mr Peters, "That the tracings be kept, and laid on the table at the Board meetings." a M £^r dl^ n re P° rted that the bridge on {he Bedford Road was in a bad state, and required looking to. Mr Peter reported that large stones were sticking up on the Egmont South Road. He had nearly lost a horse through them. He co lß idered that the person who had care of the road Bhould have the stones broken. The question of the stonecrußher was brought up. Mr A. Baker reported that there was an engine on the ground, the property of Messrs. Dingle and Tapp, and it could be procured for about 15s per week, and the crasher could be got from Sentry Hill. The Chairman read a letter from Mr Schumacler, t'-«e clerk, xegarding the large exp,iditure during the past year, and ask ; ng for a sum of money for the extra work c itailed upon him. Mr Peters said he sympathised with Mr Schumacher, butatthesametiiae several settlers had applied for small pieces of work to be done on the different loads, and "that took all their funds. If the Board could afford it he certainly would grant what Mr Schumacl er requested, as he had done his v o:k well. It was moved by Mr Peters, " That the members recognised the work done by the secretary, but that the Board is not in a position to give any more money by way of bonus." This was seconded by Mr Whitehouse. MrHorrocks said ho thought Mr Schumacher's claim was a fair one, but at the same time where were the funds to come from. He moved as an amendment " That Mr Schumacher receive half fie amount (£5 ss) he asked for." This was seconded by Mr Atkinson. For the amendme- 1 : Messrs Baker, Horrocks, Mathews, and Atkinson. Against : Messrs Peters, Langley, Surrey, and Bishop. The Chairman gave his casting vote with the noes, and the original resolution was then carried. It was moved by Mr Peters, and seconded by Mr Horrocks, " That a rate of fd, and a special rate of \in the £ be struck." Mr Langley said, in compliance with instructions given at last meeting he" had removed the tree. It was moved by Mr* Peters " That 5s be paid to Mr Langley for moving the tree on the Durham Road." Agreed to. Mr H. Peters was instructed to remove a tree on the Bedford Road. The tender of T. Cheevers. £14 16s 3d, for contract on the Surrey Road was accepted. The following amount was passed for payment, £51 13s.
