GREYMOUTH COAL MINERS DISPUTE.

Gbeymoeth, August 21. — All hands on the tug Westland will be discharged. It is believed that operations will be resumed on Monday, pending the appointment of a Royal Commission.

The hearing of the alleged perjury charge against Constable Gillespie, of Manaia, will be heard at Wanganui at the next sittings of the Supreme Court there. This has definitely been decided on. " " You can send all letters addressed to me to my room," a gentleman was heard to say at a prominent hotel in New York. "Is not your wife with you?" quietly asked the clerk, whereupon the guest flushed uh and demanded to know what the pther meant. " There are no letters coming to me that my wife may not see, Bir," was his somewhat indignant remark. "Oh, no offence and no insinuation, I assure yon," said the clerk, with perfect equanimity. "We are obliged to be care ful about such things, because wornon sharks prey on the male guests of all tho hotels. Before you have been 48 hours in New York you 'will receive letters from women claiming* to be old acquaintances, asking for appointments, and so on. Of course, you do not know them, and never heard of them ; but that is their little game." " How do they get tho addresses of guests?" "Easily enough, through the hotel papers, which are published daily with the complete lists of all the arrivals at the principal hotels." The guest's anger was appeaßed by the time this explanation was given, and before he walked away I heard him say. •• Well, I guess your rule is the safest. I'll get my letters in the office."
