ARRIVAL OF DIRECT MAIL.

Wellington, May 19. — The R.M.S. Aorangi arrived at Wel K ngton from London, via way pores, at 1.30 p.m. to-day. She left London on April 3, and Plymouth on April 5. With the exception of a north-east gale off Cape Leuwin, which lasted three days, tine weather was experienced throughout the voyage. She brings 1617 tons of cargo for New Zealand, 965 tons of which are for Wellington. The mail consists of 211 bags and 55 parcel posts. Passengers for New Plymouth are: Messrs Barker, Englefield, Eji-e, Taylor, Forater, Payne, and Peake.

A Press Association telegram from Hawera states that at a meeting of the A & P Association on Saturday, it was resolved to ask the Northern Meat Freezing Co., to re-open the Waitara works, and ship frozen meat on board of a cargo steamer direct to London from the roadstead off the mouth of the Waitara river ; an omount of beef and mutton equal to 20,000 sheep was guaranteed in the room.

Mr H. Eyre Kenny, barrister of Gisborne, has been appointed R.M., Warden, and Coroner, at Westport, vice Mr Bird who re' 'res.

A repoi c gained currency in town to-day (Monday), that a person, who gave evidence at the inquest now proceeding at the Courthouse, had been arrested, but for what offence, was not stated definitely. Enquiries have been made concerning this repoit, which turns out to be entirely without foundation so ff • as the police know.

An extra Maori interpreter, Mr Thompson, waa engaged at the inquest today, (Monday), in taking down Maori depositions.
