The following is a sample of the telegrams sent to the morning papers by the Press Association agent here, respecting the Recreation Ground murder : — " After 2 p.m. the evidence of the witness Wilson was continued. He withdrew all the statements he had made to the police about seeing Maloney on Friday, as he found he had made a mistake. It was on Thursday the events occurred which he told the police, but he was certain that he saw Maloney on Friday all the same. Witaess refused to state what business he carried on formerly in Wellington. He is now a scissors-grinder. He also declined to say whether he had ever been known under a different name. He swore on Mb oath he did not know his name, nor did he know his father." Putting words in a man's mouth he never uttered is decidedly wrong ; and everyone knows that Wilson in his evidence neither said he told the police or anyone tlse that he " saw Maloney" on the Thursday or Friday. Here is another instance where the Press Association agent for the morning paper sends a wrong statement — " Michael Maher stated that he saw deceased on 11th April, at 1 p.m., in the town of New Plymouth, going in the direction of his homo. This evidence was contradictory to that of all the other witnesses, who swore that Maloney was last seen in town at 11 a.m," Mr Manor's evidence was not contradictory to the other witnesses who saw Maloney in town at 11. He merely stated he saw deceased later in the day.
