Sir Halliday Macartney, English Secretary to tho Chinese Envoy, in the course of an interview on Wednesday, said that China insisted on being placed on an equal status with the other Powers, and asserted that an agreement with Australia would have been concluded had it not been for ten days' delay occassioned by Sir John Walshain, British Minister at Pekin. ENGLISH TROOP* IV EGYPT. Lord Salisbury has informed Turkey that it is impossible to hasten the evacuation of Egypt. NhW LI KNSISG- RILL. The now Licensing Bill, introduced in tho House of Commons by Lord Randolph Churchill, provides that twothirds of the householders may veto the granting of a publican's license. It also contains provisions for tho registration of clubs, with a maximum fee of £2000. In moving the first reading, which was carried yesterday, he suggested that the bill bo referred to a Committee. Sir Wilfred Lawson eulogised the bill, but was opposed to the clauses granting compensation to those whose licenses had been taken away. IHISH RAILWAY BT.UKRS. Archbishop Walsh, who is acting as mediator between the Directors of the Great Southern and Western Railway Company and the men out on strike, is opposed to a compromise being effected. Several of the signalmen were prosecuted by the Directors for deserting their posts. One was fined £10, and the charges against six others were withdrawn. The drivem state that they will strike if the Directors engage blacklegs. B ULANGEB INVITED TO FRANCE. Paris, May 1. Lending supporters of General Boulanger have left Paris, fearing that if they remained they would be arrested. The supporters of Boulanger urge him to return to Paris, in order to take part in the labour celebrations, but he did not STRIKE IN GKRMANY Berlin, May 1. In this city striked of various trades have taken place owing to the refusal of masters to grant the men a holiday on the occasion of the labour demonstration. Several of the masters, in order to prevent trouble, conceded to the mend's demands. The bricklayers, who are out on strike, attacked the nonUnionists who had been taken on in their places. A stubborn fight ensued, during which there was a good deal of bloodshed. The ringleaders were arrested.
