A meeting of the Wcsluyan Temperance J Society was held on Monday evening, when tho members were given an address by their new minister, the Rev. P. W. Fairclongh. This gentleman in his speech evinced a wide knowledge of the subject j of temperance, and added reasons personal, social, political, and religious, for the adoption of total abstinence, which were unanswerable. At the close of the meeting a desultory discussion took place on social questions connected with the address. j The following particulars respecting the paddle steamer " Terranora," which it ia reported that Rev. The vessel is a Sydney-owned craft of 350 tons gross, and being of comparatively light draught, is expected to prove suitable to the Waitara River trade. She is expected to arrive here from Newcastle shortly." Another anecdote characteristic of the Victorian Governor's homely instincts is related in connection with his recent visit to Ballarat. When the special train stopped at the ancient township of Ballan, his Excellency stopped out of the carriage and was accosted by an elderly dame, who said, "Sir, could I see the Governor?" " Certainly," replied the Earl, •' I am the Governor." The old fashioned lady was rewarded with a hearty shake of tho hand, when ahe had recovered from her astonishment at his youthful appearance, she ventured to comment on the fact of his Excellency being clean-shaved. <( Well," said the Earl, '• I had whiskers once, but they were inclined to be nearly as red as a fox, and the Countess insisted on my shaving them off." The incident caused great amusement on the platform, and was the principle subject of conversation "on the block" at the little township for several days subsequently.
