MURDER IN RECREATION GROUND.

FURTHER PARTICULARS. POLICE MAKING INQUIRIES IN COUNTRY. RUMOURS THAT WRONG MAN MURDERED. REPORT THAT A TRAMP DID DEED. The police are still actively engaged in pursuing enquiries about the murder of Stephen Maloney. Constable Scully, with Mr W. Gray as interpreter, has been in the country on several occasions, but the object of his search has not transpired, in fact the police are altogether silent on what they are now doing, and information as to what is the nature of the evidence cannot therefore be ascertained. The public interest in the murder is still of deep character, and pros and cons are discussed by almost everybody. MISS MARION COOPER SAW THE PRISONER, Mahi Kai, in the police yard, so it is stated, along with two other Maoris on Tuesday [ afternoon, in order to see if she could identify him as the Maori sho saw in the Recreation Grounds on Friday morning lust. As far as could ba learned, she stated that neither of tho other two Maoris was the man, but she coild not be positive whether the third Maori, Mahi Kai, was the man, as she was too frightened when she passed the Maori in the path in the Recreation Grounds that (Friday) morning. This is hearsay, as the police refuse to give information on the subject. UNRELIABLE RUMOURS. Several rumours have been in circulation, some to the effect that another man has been arrested ; that the wrong man was murdered, as it must have been another man, who has money, who was to bo the victim; and again, it has been asserted that a tramp had been observed in the neighborhood of Inglewood or some other place in the district, having a decidedly suspicious appearance. All these reports, it is almost needless to say, are groundless, as inquiry has been made about them, with the result that not an atom of truth surrounds any of tho statements.
