DANGER AROUND INGLEWOOD.

The south-east gale that began on Thursday last continued on Sunday with unabated vigor, and was the cause of further spreading and making more dangerous the bush fires in the vicinity of Inglewood and down the Mountain Road. A good deal of damage has been caused in that part of the country, fences, outhouses, and cocksfoot grass being destroyed to a considerable extent. Some very narrow escapes of homesteads from the fires are also reported. Around Inglewood the fires are exceptionally severe, and Mr H. Brown has had to take the utmost precautionary measures to prevent the flames from destroying his sawmill. Such precautions have, in fact, to be taken by all the settlers, including the inhabitants of Inglewood, whose houses are near standing or felled bush, and a most trying time has been experienced by all during the last few days. On the other side of the Mountain the fires have also been very threatening, and a good deal of, damage has been caused around Warea, and further down the coast. The smoke from these fires has hung like a pall over the whole country for the last four days, and to those who live in, or in the vicinity of, the hush it has been decidedly blinding and disagreeable. The gale subsided this (Monday) morning, and the .progress of the flames has therefore been stayed.
