MR SANTLEY AND HIS AGENT.
Mr Edward W. Price, agentfor Mr Charles Santley, the well-known baritone, was brought before the Water Police Court, Sydney, on a charge of stealing, or appropriating, JEISG 5s sd, which was really duo to Mr Santley. It appears that the accused and a man named John Kent were the whole of the "Australasian Entertainment Burcan," and that ho had got moneys from the Sydney Philharmonic Society for performances of "Elijah" in which Mr Santley sang, and failed to account for them. It was clearly shown (says the Daily Telegraph) that Price engaged the singer for a certain percentage of the gross proceeds, that ho made his own contract with the Philharmonic Society and received the jnoney due to him, but although Mr Bantloy carried out his portion of tho contract Price had failed to pay him the money duo to him. The prosecution contended that the percentage due to Mr Santley was really his property, and that Price by retaining it had embezzled und stolen it, but the defence wore succcHsful in proving that it was merely a breach of contraot and that Mr Santloy could only |tej( jiia remedy In thi civil Courts, m
I Addison, S.M., in dismissing the two charges against Prico, declared that there was a gross miscarriago of justice in the case, and stigmatised Prico's conduct as iliagnicoful and dishonest. Ho felt sure that Mr Santloy had the sympathy of the general public in tho unfoitunato position in which ho had boon placed.
