ANOTHER BOAT ACCIDENT IN WELLINGTON.
ONE LIFE LOST. [per pkbss association.] Wellington, November 11. — A .boat accident occurred in Wellington harbor on Saturday afternoon, when Mr Ernest L. Widdop, chief clork in the employ of Messrs Buckley, Stafford, and Treadwell was drowned. The deceased had gone out for a sail in an open centre-board whaleboat with Mr W. P. James, clerk of the R.M. Court, and a son of the latter's, a mere lad. When in Evans' Bay, about 1.30 p.m., the boat jibbed, and the boom striking Wr Widdop, who was bailing out the boat, knocked him overboard. Mr James took prompt measures to secure deceased, and although he was alive when he got him back in the boat, he expired before the Bhore was reached. It is supposed that Widdop must have been stunned by the boom, as he was able to swim. Deceased was 23 years of age. An inquest was held on Sunday morning, when a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned.
