The appearance of a large shark — estimated to be fully 17 feet long —in the Waitara river on Thursday morning last, caused some excitement. The monster swam up the river as far as the bridge, and disported himself, looking like a log in the water. When attempts were, however, made to stupefy him with dynamite, he put himself out of reach, and it is presumed swam down the river again, and over the bar to sea. The Maoris all down the coast towards Opunake are busily employed in cutting flax for the mills, and the quantity that they are getting through in a week is something astonishing. So many of them are at the work, that they soon fill the mills up with the green fibre. Messrs Dingle & Corke have much ploasure in announcing to their customers and the public generally that they have arranged with Mr C. E. Gledhill to rent his new building, adjoining their own, until the end of the year. The additional space thus secured will enable them to display their large stock of furniture and fancy ware to greater advantage than hitherto, and they would respectfully invite inspection. The stock is continually being replenished by shipments of new furniture, and all the novelties in fancy ware, china, glassware, Japanese goods, &c. During December both shops will be open every evening until ten o'clock, when the shilling and sixpenny tables will be filled with fancy goods, a shipment of ten cases of which is expected to arrive in a few days from England. —Advt. I am very anxious to wind up my business completely before the end of this year, and as the time is drawing short and tho stock is still very large, I must make even greater concessions to purchasers than I have already done. —Everything in my shop is now marked down on the most ruinous scale and the selection in all classes of Summer Goods is both high class and variod. To purchasers of parcels of £1 up to £5, I will allow a discount of 5 per cent, and on purchases of £5 and upwards one of 10 per cent.
