NEWS OF MR STANLEY.

Sib F. do Winton wiites, nnder date of June 12, aa followß :«The following telegram has juat been received via Zanzibar. It givtß news of Mr Stanley op to Dec. 2 laflt. He was then at Uriri, at the south-east end of the lake Victoria Nvaoza, having left Emm at Umyarn, which is situated in tht district of Kavirondo, at the north-east corner of the lake. It should be remembered that Stanley left bia camp at Boualya ; on the Arnwitni on Sept. 4 1888, and n6 it vronld appear an impossibility for the joorney from Bonalya to Uriri to be accomplished in eighty-two days — ».«., from Sept. 4 to Dec. 2 — some mistake has been made an regards this date. It is quite possible for the messenger who brought the news to have left Uriri the middle of February and reached Zanzibar on June 10. The allusion to "Mitchell" ib also somewhat puzzling. The piesent white men with Mr Stanley are Lieutenant Stairs, Mr Nelson, Mr Mounteney Jephson, Dr. Parkes, and Mr Bonny (besides Mr Stanley's servant), and the only other white men in that part of Africa are Emm Pasha and Captain Gasati. "Nelson" might, however, become " Mitchell " in passing into the native vernacnlar and then back again into English. From the direction Mr Stanley is taking it would appear be is making for Msaldla, at the south end of the lake, where a large depdt of provisions was deposited more than a year ago, and, as he would have the. advantage of water carriage to take his caravan from Unyara to Kagheyi, the missionary Btation at the Booth end of the lake, it is to be hoped he has for euma V.a c been in possession of bis stores, io that the main difficulties of his enterprise ba/o been successfully overcome. Should my surmise that he arrived at Uriri abont Feb. 2, in place of Dec. 2, be correct, and that he has si»ce pushed on to Kagheyi, at the south end of the lake, we may soon have further news in addition to the letter given to the trader of Uriri who forwards thismesaage, and who is bringing the letter himself to Zanzibar. "Zanzibar, June 12. — Agent-General informs us letter received from Ururi, •outh-aouth-east Victoria Nyanza, Deo. 2. Statei Stanley arrived Urnri, stayed for a ■hort time, returned to Victoria Nyanza, J«f t behind fifty six men, owing to •ickneei, and forty-four rifles; most of the sick eventually died shore time after. Mitchell urrived there, took away rifles shortly after, reported Mr EL M. Stanley sustained heavy loss of men, owing to sickness; no provisions. Finally Stanley arrived. Said Emm Pasha is nt Unyara, fifteen days distant. Stanley took away everything, returned to Emm Pasha, giving writer letter to take personally to AgeotGeneral."
