MAN BURNED TO D^ATH. Woodvillb, July 29.
The man Benbow, who was burned to death in the hotel fire at Danevirke, was employed as a groom, and appears to have been suffocated in trying to make his escape. The other inmates got oat of the building with difficulty. Insurances : £500 in South British; £500 in New Zealand ; and £100 in {Standard : also, on iurnitnre and billiard table, £880 in Union, and £320 in Standard. GOLD DI S CO\ERYAT HOKITIK&. There is great excitement over the recent gold discoveries aouth of Hokitika. MoGovern and party have two feet of wash dirt going from to lchvfc to the dish. Gold has now been traced for over a mile. It is thought the lead will follow the line of the terrace to Lake Mahinapua — a distance of five or six miles from Hokitika River. A large rash has Bet m. The lead, which is supposed to be rich, has a heavy dark look, and the gold is also of a dark oolor. The prospectors of the terrace north of the town of Hokitika are expected to strike the same lead.
