THIS DAY.
Thubsday, July 11.— The Court opened this morning at 10 o'olook, when George Bowles was examined. He said he had a disagreement with Hawkins over money matters, but denied the statement regarding the sheep. Some had been taken from his place, but he nerer wanted them back again. He had not been good friends with the deceased, but never had a direct quarrel. The question nbout sheep was triad at Masterton, and a jury returned & verdict for Hawkins. Thomas Tollej, gunsmith, was examined as an expert regarding the gun, but could not tell when the gun had been laet fired. It was brought to him rusty, and if the one barrel was rusty and the other damp they oould not botn have boon fired the same day.. Soft red rust appears on the muzzle, and a couple of days after being cleaned by a man's fingers. Verdigris would not be removed from the nipple by firing off capo. Thomas Harlen, milkman, gave evidence as to Ghemis coming to him to Bee some papers, which he thought might be of use in his lawsuit. Mrs Margaret Cook also gave evidence as to the delivery of milk bills by prisoner.
