CHARGE AT RAILWAY STATION.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sib, — Those who imagine that no I injustice is meted oat to Government officialsby unscrupulous woald be public men, will find a hard nut to craok judging by a letter whioh appeared in your last week's Budget, and signed "J. Arthur Jones," in which yoai many readers are informed that tome station master (i"l New Zealand I presume) detained some pence (whether one or five is not quite olear), from that gentleman's, ohange. Now, sir, to cast euoh slurs broadcast about any station master iB like having a shot in the dark, inasmuch as the latter have not the right of replying, and it would, I think, have been more manly on Mr Jones' part to have named some of the aggrieved persons for whom he wishes to champion the cause, also that of the station master who has been wicked enough to so offend. Mr Jones, certainly, has the sympathy of the sotUerß in thw loss he has sustained, but there is a spirit of fair play which thoy admire in a man, but which, I am sorry co say, Mr Jones has entirely overlooked. Mr Jones tells us that if he was station maiter he would use his brains, and advocates the stamped ticket system for change, whioh I hope will be established at Stratford for Mr Jones' special benefit ; he will then hava stamped ticketstond uo change, and, like mysalf will come to the conclusion that the man who lost his fivepence and said nothing had more brains than the man who so much fancied tho stamped tickets. If Mr Jones penned his letter in th« hopes of it catching the eye o£ the Railway Commissioners, I should much like to catch their other eye. particularly if Mr McKorrow goes into calculations and asks hiß fellow Commissioners the probable cost of conveying the writer to Wellington. If Mr Jones is a man of brains as he claims to be, whioh no one can doubt after reading his letter, be Bhould become a member of the Stratford Town Board. There is a splendid opportunity jtßt now for him to make bis mark. He could assist tho members of that august body to solve that much vexed question of street cultivation, which has suddenly and unexpectedly come to a crisis, and which haß been further aggravated by the Hon. tie Rhodes' Town District Amendment Bill. — 1 am, etc., Fair Play.
Stratford, July 8. [In justice to Mr Jones, we think it right to mention that he did name the Station Muster he referred to, but we considered it our duty to strike out that portion of tbe letter. No doubt if the writer of the above asks Mr Jones he will not be afraid to tell him the name of theoartv. —Ed. T. Zf.] F *'
