disappearance, of a child. [per pbess association.] ' DUNBDIN, November 5. — A pecnlar affair is reported to the police at Balplutha. , Joseph Valentine" called on the police on . Saturday, aud reported that on the 28th of l Ootober he was taking a child two weeks , old from its mother's house to that of his ■ister and wbilo walking along the banks i of the Clutha on a dark night he stumbled, and the child fell in the river and was sever seen since. It is said the child was illegitimate. Valentine has been detained in custody pending inquires. \
