VIOTORIA R.O. SPRING MEETING. [per press association.] MeIiBOURNR, November 3. — The weather for the opening day of the V.R.O. Sprin? Races was fine, but rather closo an \ sultry. The race throughout was most exciting, and was won by she^r gameness by half a length, a neck separat- J ing second and thirl. Malua was fourth, j Timo, 2min 12£ sec. Hotham Handicap. 1$ miles and a distance. — Mara, 1 ; Menotti, 2 ; Touchstone, 3. Eleven started, including Enfilade. Time, 2min 54£ sec. Maribyrnoncj Plate. 5 furlongs. — Necklet, 1; Cnrrinstton, 2; Rudolph, 3. Eighteen horses started. Won easily by a length. Time, lmin 2Jsec. V.R.O. Derby ; a sweep of 25 soys, with 650 added. 1£ miles. — Eneisrn, 1; Carbine, 2; Melos, 3. Pearlshell, Volley, Wycombe, and Aldwalloch also started. As the hornee were drawing up in line at the post, Volley lashed out and kicked Carbine. On the fall of the flag Wycombe dashed away with the lead and made the running for Meloß. Passing the sheds Wycombe was still at the head of affairs, with Carbine bandy. Approaching the home turn, Carbjne supplanted Wycombe, but was immediately challenger] by Mr Gtnnnn's other candidate, Melon, and as the horses turned into the straight the latter had a little the best of it. Carbine, ho wever, came again, and when once more in front tbe race appeared a vn*ral for hi'ii, bat when within the diatanoe Halee brought up Ensign, and completely outgeneraling Derrutr, woa cleverly by a head. Time, 2mia 45£ sec. Ensign was decorated with the riband by Lady Loch. Selling Race. 6 furlongs. — Surprise, 1; Lady Marion, 2; Hogmanay, 3. Seven started. Won easily by two lengths. Time, lmin 15£seo. Co burg Stakes. One mile and a furlong. — Plutarch, 1; Lord John, 2; Dividend, 3. Seventeen started. Won comfortably by a hngth. Time, lmin 55jJ8ec.
