A READING ROOM NUISANCE.

TO THE EDITOE.

Sib, — My observations during the past few days have forced me to the inevitable conclusion that, in fairness to all those who go to the Readingroom to have a look at the paper, there should exist in connection with that establishment some hard nnd fast rule prohibiting any one from monopolizing a paper beyond a given time.

On several occasions of late I have visited the Readingroom with the intention of haviug a glance at one of the local papers, and much to my disgust and n certain amoont of pent up wrath, I have, on each occasion, beheld that particular paper in tho hands of one particular individual, who, judging: from the amount of time during which lie thought fit to stick to it, was evidently labouring under tho gross delusion that it was left there for his special use and benefit, and that consequently no one in f-bef -be world could lay claim to any privileges as far aB it was concerned. The fact that on the last occasion of those above mentioned he had the paper when I entered the room, and that cheered by the vain hope of having a look at its columns I waited only one hour, will, I fancy, prove to you that I am not grumbling without something like a cause. Had he been drinking in the horrors of the lost novel out, or the beauties of tho new poem "Zealandia," he could not have stuck to his pleasurnblo task with more zeal than he stuck to the paper during the whole of that horrible hour. After racking my brain for some thought that would throw a ray of light on this extraordinary phenomena I arrived at the conclusion that, starting with the title of the paper, he must have gone clean through itadvertisements, leader, locals, and everything contained in its columns, not forgetting to acquaint himself with the names of those by whom it was published before laying it down.

Hoping you will do me the favour of finding a corner for this in your valuable paper. — I am, etc.,

Anti-monopolists. [Our correspondent by spending a penny need not have been annoyed ns he says he has, nor need he have wasted nn hour in order to get a free read. Although free readingrooms are open to the public they are not established merely for the purpose of local papers being porused there. We advise onr correspondent to buy the local papers in future.— Ed. T.H.~\
