The R.M.S. Zealemdis, has arrived at Auckland from San Francisco, she brings the following passengers :— Mr and Mrs i Frank Graham, Mr and Mrs. J. Holder and two children, H. Borstocke, E. J. Hopkins, W. C. Guessr, B. Cartwright, and eleven steerage ; nlso, 61 cabin ond 32 steerage for Sydney. Our readers who have been in the habit of obtaining their papers from Mrs Pitt will ia future be able to get then from Mr Pearce, at bis store, near the corner of Gover-straet and Devon-street. Tho s.s. GleneTg will leave the breakwater for Ooehanga to-morrow (Sunday) morning at 3 o'clock. Measleß are very prevalent ia Wellington at the present time. There always something bad prevalent in the windy city. The Rifles Band will, weather permitting, march out this evening. As will be seen by advertisement, the proprietors of the "Ideal" Rink intend to open ia the Inglewood Town Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Their rink in town Btill continues to have attractions for many. On Piiday night, after the ordinary hour of closing, Mr Price, of the Alexandra Hall Rink, had a practice of the Grand March for the Carnival night Tuesday next — in order that the inarch will be executed well on that night. The Carnival will draw a big honse judging by the amount of interest that is being manifested over it. Although the list for skaters is full, there are still reserved seats left. • r l r According to an item published ia the summary of news received by the 'Frisco mail, intense heat had been experienced in New York, many persons having been killed by the oppressive atmosphere. A meeting of ladies convened by the Mayoress was held in the Town Hall on Thursday afternoon, for the purpose of considering means of helping the Rifles Band financially, by getting up some entertainment. After discussion it was decided that a rink coacert should be given in the Alexandra Hall on August 31st, Mr Price, the rink manager, having consented to an arrangement whereby the proceeds on that night would be divided between the band and himself equally. This concert will be rendered as attractive as possible by the ladies, who have taken the matter up. On November 9th a ball will be held, and the surplus from this, should there be any, together with the share from the riak concert, will go to a bazaar fund. A. bazaar will then be held near the end of the present year. ' ' , The Hnwera Star hears of large proposed reductions ia the staff , 'of railway employees da the Wanganui line. It is said that notice of dismissal has bsen issued to about forty, lad that the men in several cases cast lots, in order to decide who Bhould be taken and who left. Ia replying to questions ia the House, the Premier said there waa no truth whatever in the statement that the Government Insurance Department had refused to pay Peroivai Bear's life insurance polioy. The Department had simply asked for tho usual proofs of identity, and no delay had occurred in the matter. There are painful rumors afloat about Mr Archibald Forbes, who is in America with his wife, an American lady, says a correspondent of the Pall Mall Gazette. The last time I saw him was in the ooffoe room of the Londoa aad North Western Hotel, at Liverpool, where he was lunching before going oa board the White Star boat. Mr. Forbes, who in his prime was a fine,; tall fellow,^ with a military bearing was bent like an old man, his huir and moustache nearly white, qould not even walk across the room without the aid of a stout walking stick. He is suffering from an affection of the kidneys, contracted ia his campaigning days. It is said that Jonathan Roberts, tbe celebrated escaped conviot, has been in Wellington since his escape from durance vile, and thai he left there by the Te Anau for Melbourne about three weeks ago. Mr W. P. Reeves hns given notice to ask the Government to consider the utility of "recommending tho oabatitatioo, ia place of one or more of the subjeotß now taught in the State school* course, a reasonable amount of iastructioa oa the natural resources and features, olitnate, products, industries, manufactures, and history of New Zealand."
