IMBECILES IN THE ABYLUMS.

During the passage of the vote for Lunatic Asylums a discussion took place about keeping harmless imbeciles in ouch institutions.^ Dr. Newman denounced tbe practice, wbiio Mr Samuel said he knew cases where such persons had been iischarged from motives of economy, and they lapsed into criminal acts of violence. The question was asked what should be done with them? and an ultra radical member interjected, "Send them to another place." A facetious bnt irreverent member interjected, "Put them in the Upper Houae 1" Later on Mr Marchant rose, and remarked, with an injured air, that there was a large inorease in lunatics this year, " Where do they all come from ?" he asked vehemently. The answer came from all tbe other members, who responded with equal vehemenoe, " Taranaki 1" But the members who uttered the word looked fit subjects for tho asylum.
