GREAT FIRE IN VIRGINIA CITY.

SEVENTY HOUSES BURNT. A g.rbat fire ocenned at Virginia City, Nevada, on Aagußt stb, when 70 houses were destroyed. Virginia City, situated en the famous Comstock silver lode, is at the East foot or! Moaut Davidson, and is the chiof city of Nevada. It was founded soon after the disoovery of the Cornstock, and is laid ont op a precipitous site. It in fifty-two miles from Reno, one of the stations on the Union Pacifia Railway, at the terminus o£ the Virginia and Truckeo Railway. In 1860, with a population of 2345, it contained an hotel and — i newspaper office. The latter building consisted of a shed and one room; the former being used aa a cooking, dining and sleeping place by editors, reporters and compositors, and the latter answering as an editorial, typographical and advertising departments combined. With a population now numbering upwards of 25,000 the cosmopolitan city is yet unattractive in appearance ; but when night falls on the visible town, the invisible town undergrounds glimmering with a thousand lights, just as it has been glimmering through all the summer days and all the winter nights ever einco the Comstook lode was rirst penetrated by a shaft ; for there is no repose in that mysterious region, no relapse of day into night, no summer, no winter, no Sunday. Approximately, one-fourlh of the population is hidden in tho mines.
