HORTICULTURAL SOOIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The fifth annual meeting of the Horticultural Society was held in the Council Chambers on Wednosday night. There were present: — Mesdames Woyergansr, and Doveniah, Miss Bmitb, Messrs. H. R. Richmond (Chairman), F. P. Oorkill, J. B. Roy, J. T. Davis, C. Bellrin^er, 0. W. Govett, W. Nioholls, J. Skinner (hon. senrptarj), and S. Brooks. The Annual Rjcport. — The honorary secretary (Mr J. Bkinner) had pleasure in his report to notice* the continued success of the Sooiety. Tho entries wf re also very numerous, there beiug 704 as against 462 for the previous show. This was on account of the schedule being enlarged, and a number of special prizes being given. For the speci il pria-s <»ivon by Meßsrs. G. Cliff aud James Hooker for hand bouquets made by children in the primary schoold there were one hundred atrt eleven entries from all parts of tho district. Aa Mr Chapman kindly gave £1 for distribution as prizes, ihe Committeo wore euibled to gire 31 priz-s anountin^ to £2 10s for the chilJreti's class mentioned. Tho total amount paid in prize money was £28 15s 31, asa/iinst £23 2s Gl for the previous year. The number of members had unfortunately decreased from 93 to 61, several who have hitherto been members preferring to pay for entries and door money than to pay for their ticket of membership. Tho report went on to state that owing to Mr P. C. Morton's unavoidable absence no bnlanoe-shcet could be placed before the meeting, but the books showed a credit balance of £2 5a Id oa the year's operations, and a credit balance at the Bank of £3 11s 61. The total receipts for the year were £56 4s 7i, and the expenditure £53 19d 61, as against receipts £64 Is 91, and expenditure £59 10s lid for the previous year. — The Chairman congratulated the meeting on the success of the last show, and pointed out that they had tided over what was considered a rlull year by coming out free of debt. Ho asked those present to further exert themselvex, and in the future to keep their Society goiog. He also regretted the lack of culture tho Public Works Department showed in not having the grounds round the several Government buildings nioely planted; but he hoped that the members or the Society would do their best to beautify their own grounds, and thuo elacate their children to a love of horticulture. — Mr Go v kit pointed out that the Sooiety had £20 worth of assets not mentioned in tho report.— On Mr Davis' motion, seconded by Mr Roy, the report was adopted. Election of Officers. —Mr H. R. Richmond wub re-electrd President; Messrs Govett and Roy were re-elected VioePresidents; Mr J. Skinner was re-elected hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr Govett speaking in appreciative tones of Mr Skinner's efforts in the past two years; the Committee, elected by ballot, were: Messrs C. E. Bellringer, W. Skinner, T. Colson, J.T. Davis, S. Brooks, H. Dempsey, and W. L. Newman. Mr A. B. R. Fookcs web re-elected auditor. Show Day. — A. discussion ensued on tbe queslioa of holding both a Spring and an Autumn Show, where horticulture and produce could be exhibited, as in Wanganui. After a good deal of discussion, on Mr. Roy's motion, seconded by Mr. Corkill, it was decided to hold the Spring Show on the fourth Wednesday in November. The idea of an Autumn Show was dropped, as it waß poiated out that the Agricultural Society had not met as yet to see if they should hold an Auluma Show. Autumn Show. — After considerable discussion as to holding an Autumn Bbow, in the event of the Agricultural Sooiety not holding one, it was decided, oa Mr. Corkill's motion, to leave the matter to the Committee to hold such a Show if desirable, the Committee to have power to make such alterations in tho regulation* as to moet the new Show. Annual Meeting— lt was dooided to hold the next annual meeting in tbe first week in July. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
