« CAPTAIN'S STATEMENTS PROVED TO BE WRONG. CHAIRMAN HARBOUR BOARD' 3 TELEGRAM. Thb: Wellington Post on Thursday stated tliat "a captain of one o£ tin coastal steamers, who ha* been to Now Plymou'h frequently with his vessel, stated in lown to-day that, from soundings taken sioco tho wreck of the Hawea, he found a rock which lies in a dangerous prsition for vessels entfiins; tho New Plymouth lmbor. He also states that it is tho rock which was <ref erred to at the enquiry yesterday as ona foun'l by the Maoriea, but that its position, an given in Court, ia a long way ou». In his opinion, it is probable that tint was the rock on which tho Hawea struck. We hear that Captain Allman, of the Penguin, in consequeqee of tho above, tnlfigraphed to tho harbormaster at New Plymonth, informing him that he rannot tako the risk of bringiag the Penguin to the wharf, and that unless he crocs off to her, and takes in, her she will have to remain outside." From enquires made locally concerning this piece of wonderful news, we find that Captain Alltnan telegraphed to Mr W. L. Newman, the Union Company's agent here, that he would not bring the Penguin i\ on Saturday, but that the harbor master would have to come off to her as he (Captain Allman) would not undertake the risk of bringing in the steamer. Mr Newman aravered this telegram, but what was the definite sense of the reply could not be learnt, but indirectly we heard it was to the effect that the captain ought to fetch his boat in. Mr Corkill, Chairman o£ the Harbour Board took the matter up promptlr, and this (Friday) morning wired to Wellington | as under : — ''Editor Wellington Post— Allegation re rock in or near traok of vessels entering New PI r mouth harbour is utterly unfounded. Agent of Union Steamship Company informs me this morning that he has wired Captain Allman that he need have no hesitation about coming in on usual track. "F. P. Corkill, "Chairman N.P. Harbour Board."
