THE RECREATION GROUNDS FANCY FAIR.
THIS £)A."Sr. Unfortunately for the ladies who have worked so hard for months past to arrange a j Fancy Fair in the Recreation Grounds, Wednesday (to-day), tha appointed day, turned out ao bitteny cold, on top oi rain that fell the ni^ht previous, that the idea of holding the fair in the open had to be abandoned. Tho Uecreation Grounis Board and sevbral of the ladies who have taken a most active part in getting the novelty up, also the Mayor, mot in' the Courtroom in the morning and decided to hold the Fair in the Alexandra Hall, instead of ia the grounds. This course was pursued for tho reason that it was too cold imd wet to hold it in the open air to-day, and if it wns postponed till to-morrow, whioh might happen to be auch auother day as thia, then they could not get the Hall, as it was engage-i for Thursday ni^ht. As soon as this alior&tion was-deflnitely fixed, workmen were put on to clear the Beats out of tho Hall, »ud as the delay would have to be made up somehow, it was resolved to fix the hour of opening at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, instead of at 2 p.m. had it boen in the grounds. All the morning and at midday the ladies interested, assisted by several gcntlecneD, were arranging the stalls — five or cix — in the main hall, and on the stage a Christmas tree. In the side-room and gallery games will bo held, while the best part of the atage will be occupied by tho Rifles Band, who will march out this evening before the Fair, and then play a number of pieces in the Hall. For some reason not explained at present tho Smart Roud Band the other day decided not to play at the Fair, but what was their exact reason could not bo found out. In consequence of this they will not ba at tho Hall to-night. As regurds the La-lies' Sowing Committee, who have worked bo assiduously for months past in the Council Chamber, assisted, however, by a nutnber of others, it has been deemed advisable not to publish the names of any in tLis preceding work, as tho members of the Committee have kept no record of all those who have helped, and hence they cannot furnish a complete list,
