THE NEW FRENCH PRESIDENT,
M. Sadi-Cabnot, the new French President, who is almost an unknown man, is grandson of Carnot, the celebrated member of the Directoire — who has been surnamed the Organisator de la Victoire, because of his prominent part in the organisation which followed the Revolution — and son of a senator of high standing and great capabilities. His age is between 40 and 50, and be has sat for many years aB a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the Department of Cote dOr, Dijon. By profession, M. Sadi-Carnot is a civil engineer of some eminence, but he has of late years filled the poßt of under-secretary to several Ministers, and he held a portfolio in One of the recent Ministries. He is reputbd to be a man of moderate views, devoted to the interests of the Republic; one of calm disposition, but resolute will, and capable of taking up a thoroughly independent position, co as to command the respect of all parties in the Legislature. As President he will immediately vacate his seat in the Chamber of Deputies, and will be invested with the Grand Crocs of the Legion of Honour.
