The female employees in several of the large tailoring establishments iti Auckland, have leased tbo premises used aa work rooms, and will carry on their woik by contrnct.. They will thus evade the Act for there is nothing to prevent a female working as many hours as she likes on her own account. This only shows the folly of passing such ridiculous Acts as our sapient le c islators are continually doing. Dealers in produce in Auckland declare that the present season offers a good opportunity for colonial and New Zealand butter and cheese. Several small parcels of New Zealand cheese have been sold in the London market at from 48s to 555, which is the average price of American cheese. Throughout the summer Cork butter has maintained the price o£ 108 ato 120s, the average, price being 70s to 80s, and it is considered that prices are not likely to recede before next spring. A gentleman of this town — a great admirer of the good old Maori Chief Mutu, of Puniho, for his sterling good qualities — forwarded him about a month ago a copy of Mr Hood's novelette of " The Sunken Island," by a native linguist who could translate the words. The venerable chief wus delighted with the rendering of the legend, and stated that he had heard the whole of it told a hundred times ovor, when a child. No higher tribute could be paid to the writer Ih^an this. It is not, we believe, intended to place the Hinemoa again in commission when her new boilers are finishe J. The Marine Department is arranging for a considerable portion of the work of supplying stores to the lighthouses being done locally instead of by special steamer. The Dog Island Lighthouse will be supplied by the tug from the Bluff, and the Moeraki and other lighthouses will obtain their supplies by land. The usual relief visits to the Auckland aiid other islands it is proposed shall in future be made by sailing vessel, the Tekano, instead of by one of the Government steamers. A very valuable instrument called the microphone -has been invented in Germany, and Mr Luks, of the Victoria Hotel, Auckland, has just received particulars of it from an eminent, engineering firm in Berlin :—": — " Re miorophone. We beg to report that we have made exhaustive experiments with the said instrument. We had to conduct those experiments with only temporarily constructed instruments, but found the. system working admirably and with great safety, and we have no doubt that they will very quickly come into general use. At night the instrument led in a very short space to any leaky part in water mains; 1 During daytime it will be more difficult to work on aoeount of a great and noisy traffic" Mr Luks states that the cost of suoh instruments will be about £8 in New Zealand. The many inducements offered to the publio are entirely thrown in the shade by tho great sale whioh G. M. Brusoh & Co. intend holding— submitting tho whole of their extensive stock, also the banhrupt Btoch of Honeyfield's, which they hate secured at a large discount. The- public will therefore have an opportunity of securing bonafide bargains for the Christ muß season.
