DISASTROUS ACCIDENT IN A TUNNEL.
- THREE MEN KILLED. INQUEST ON BODIES. fPBB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Invercargill, November 14. —An inquest on the bodies of the three men killed by the fall of earth in Glenhain tunnel, was held on Saturday, and continued till late at night, when it was adjourned for a week, the jury desiring to nave expert evidence as to sufficiency of timber in the excavation, which gave way under the. pressure of a slip of soil. Newalls body was recovered on Sunday, much bruised and the face disfigured.
Ihe custodian of the Public Library has forwarded to us a catalogue of the Public Library, which contains a litt of tho new book« recently imported, o£ which there are over seven hundred to choose from. Constable Tapp, of Normunby, brought up a person from Hawera this morning on committal to gaol for seven days for not paying a fine and costs in a case of cruelty to a horse. The prisoner, who is a young man, elected to tuke it out, as he could not earn tho amount of fino and costs in seven days. Mr. J. D. Pope, a y>ung New Zealander, will lecture at the Freemasons Hall, on Tuesday evening, on the life and death of Robert Emmet, the Irish patriot and martyr of 1803. The subject is one which should attract a large audience, not odly of Irishmen, but of all lovers of patriotism. The lecturer -will conclude with the recital of Emmet's speech from the dock, when asked "Why sentence of death should not be pronounced on him according to law ?" Collier &Co., of Wanganui, have received a letter from the manager of the Majeroni Company, intimating that they I will play in Wangnnui four nights. With respect to Tiirannki, Mr. Liddy writes — "I have not had a word of epencouragment or otherwise from New Ply.routh, but it set me* thinking, and if they do not put thernsslves out of the way a bit, I shall simply shut New Plymouth out, and play at Nelson, Wanganui, and Palmereton North." It would seem from this that the Company are not -likely to stop on their way from Auckland to Wanganui without someone takes tho matter up, and gets them to play here.
