PARLIAMENTARY.

POLITICAL *GOSSIP IN WELLINGTON. [TELEGitAPHED BY. OUB COBKESPONDENT/| PROTECTION MEETING. Satuhday, November 12 — At the adjourned protection meeting, held this morning, twenty-six were present. Mr Moss was in the chair. A deputation was appointed to wnit on the Government, aud ur^e a revision of the tariff. A meeting will ba held again on Monday to receive and consider the answer of the Government. PROPECTIONISTS DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER. Monday, November 14. — Ad I wired you on Saturday, a meeting of Protection members was held on that day. Among those present at the meeting were three Cabinet Ministers. A resolution was come to that the tariff should be revised this session in the direction of asaisting local industries to such an extent ac to enublo them to compete with the Home manufacturers tor colonial consumption. A deputation appointed for the purpose at once waited on Major Atkinson, and put the views of the meeting before him. PREMIER'S REPLY. The Preinier'3 reply was characteristic. He Bdid^ thiß session, he thought, should devote itself to retrenchment, and if the House would do that he would summon an early session noxt year, and propose Buch a revision of the tariff as would meet the views of Protectionists and Freetraders. ANOTHER MEETING OF PROTECTIONISTS, A meeting of the Protectionists is being held now (Monday morning), to consider the Premier's reply, and much will depend on its result. SCOBIE MACKENZIE IN A QUANDARY. Mr. Scobie Mackenzie remains in a state of wavering uncertainty as to whether or not he shall pose as an antagonist to borrowing, but I believe he has now pretty well made up his mind how to act. Mr. Mackenzie is a very clever speaker, and very gocd at inventing epigrams, but ho has the unfortunate weakness of being too cautious mentally. If he were certain of a majority, and that he would be " sent for," after triumphantly carrying a motion censuring the borrowing proposals, I believe the member for Mcunt Ida would act at once. SYDNEY GONE OVER TO THE ENEMY. Mr. Sydney Taiwhanga, who was never reckoned on as much, is understood to have gone over to the Opposition.
