EDUCATION BOARD.

Tas Education Board met on Wednesday. Present : IVliss Hoy wood, Mrs. Richmond, Messia. Kelly (chairman), Bauchope, Olson, Faull, Andrews, Adlnm, ami Symo. Opunaka. — The chairman of the OpunaUo School Committee wrote stating that his committeo had nominated Miss Capel as pupil teacher, and Miss Pennin2;ton as a cadet in the Opunake school. — The Board decided that they be appointed; appointment to date from October 1, 1887. Auditor. — The Board decided that Mr. P. C. \lorton should be auditor for the School Committees' accounts for the year ending Daceinber 31, 18S7, his reuiunerato bo £5. Tenders. — On Mr. Bauohope's motion it was resolved " That the tender o£ Mr. Morey for sections 322, 323, and 324, New Plymouth, at 30s per acre per year for seven years, nnd that Mr. E. Newland's tender for section 295, New Plymouth, at 25s per acre per year, for seven years, be accepted." Mr. James- Neill also tendered for the whole four sections at 10s per section a year for the same term. Ingievoood — The Inglewood School Committee recommended that Mrs. Grant's application for leave of absence should be acceded to, if she would find an efficient substitute to fulfil her duties. The Committee also pointed out the great necessity of. painting tho teachers' residences at Inglewood, Wortley Road, and Norfolk ttoad, and also the schools at tho last two places. It was decided to grant Mrs. Grant's application, provided that arrangements were made to the satisfaction of the Committee. With regard to the painting, tho Board decided that a report should be furnished by next meeting, showing tho state of the school .buildings with respect to tho painting and the dates of tho last painting. A Contingency. — On Mr. Olson's motion, tho Board approved of tho action of the Chairman of the Opunako School Committee in appointing, temporarily, Mr, Stewart to tho school there during the illness of Mr. Elwin, and that Mr. Stewart bo piH at the rate of £3 per week to date from October 24 inclusive, and £1 for travelling- expenses. Salary. — Mr. O. U. Hubbard, late teacher at Riihotu, wrote applying to be paid tho reru tinder of his throe months' Balnry, to which he believed he was entitled under section 47 of "Tho Education Act, 1877." He said he had only been pcid one month's salary, and hence he asked for the other two months. — Mr. BAtJCHOPB moved, 'That Mr. Hubbard having resigned his appointment, and his resignation having been accepte 1 by the Board, and the Board having paid one month's salary after the termination of his engagement, are of opinion that he has no further claia*." Seconded by Mr. Anduews, and carried. Rahotu. — The Rahotu Committee's appointment of Mr. Bell as teacher of the school there was approved of. — ?tlr. Gane, the Chairman of the Committee, also wrote as follows with regard to a school at Kina Roa^ : — "At a meeting of settlers living south of the Okuhu River I was instructed to write to you asking for information as regards building a school on the Kina Road, jikewise to state that there are 75 children living in the district, nine of whom are attending school, 36 of school age are unable to attend on account of the distance, and 30 are under school agti, and there are prospects of their numbers increasing in many quarters." — The letter was referred to the Inspector, who will enquire into tho circumstances and report ou them, Mr. Gane to be informed of decision. Architect's Repori. — The Architect's report, which contained nothing of special moment, was read : — la connection with the report, the Architect was instructed to have ridges of the roof of the High School repaired at an expense not to exceed £1. Norfolk Road. — In regard to the peti tion from lesidents at Norfolk Road, who asked therein that the teacher there should not be shifted as intended, which was referred to the Inspector to report to the Board to decide. On Mr. Andrews' motion, " That the largely increasing numbers of pupils attending the Norfolk Road School causes the Board to appoint a trained teacher, and the Board aro, therefore, unable to alter their previous deoiBion." Sewing Prizes. — The special prizes given for competition by the members of the Ladies' Sewing Committee were awarded as follows : — Standard I, Annie Pierson, Warea School; Lucy Wood, West Infants'. Standard 11, Blanche Smith, Lower Kent Road ; Nellie Kelly, Huirangi. Standard 111, Beatrice Mills, Warea, Standard IV, Ellen Oorney, Inglewood. Standard V, Mary Montgomery, Stratford; Clara Drake, Inglewood. No specimens vvero sent in for competition in Standard VI. It will be noted that the country have triumphed over the town gir.s in the sewing.
