STRATFORD.

[FBOM OUB OWN COBBESPON DENT] , October 22. —^A special meeting of, the Town Boavd was held on Friday to receive a deputation from the Mangan'ui Rohd Board re the management of the joint roadß, more especially the Pembroke Road East. The-idea is that oho or other of the two bodies should take entire control ,of the boundary roads, receiving all rateß therefrom and also a subsidy in certain cases. The last point will probably require a good deal of negotiation before it is satisfactorily adjusted, at any ■ rate no definite arrangement was arrived at on Friday. A public meeting will be held ac Midhirst on Saturday next at 7 p.m. to consider the proposed appointment of a ranger. It is hoped that all interested will attend, as the matter will probably be settled one way or the other. The Library Committee has just issued a aeat catalogue of the books now in the library. There are about 250 volumes, varied enough to suit all tastes," and the^ subscription is no great matter, even in these days of depression. ' I hope to Bee a good many new subscribers before the 31st December. All amounts received up to the date count for the Government subsidy, if it escapes retrenchment. Last Thursday's gale was the heaviest felt here for some time. A good deal of damage was done to fruit trees, ' &c, and Mr. Watkins' store paid the penalty of its commanding situation in the loss of an iron chimney. As the country gets more open we may expect these little casualties to. occur more frequently. > It cannot be too often urged upon settlers the absolute necessity of providing some substitute for the natural shelter ■ which is every year diminishing. Even now people whose homes are in small clearings on the back roads speak of the comparatively large en. mnse of the township as having quite a «Ti#o QM.fc-4>HmntA. -TOhat— will it be Jn tpn. years' time ? Stratford people will be wanting in neighbourly feeling if they don't turn out on Friday next, wet or fine, and help to give the Ngaire school entertainment a bumper house. That they will have a good evening's enjoyment is beyond question. I trust the retirement of the present management of the Dramatic Club will be only temporary, just a spell while the busy time lasts. An entertainment is to be given at Stratford on Friday, the 4th, to raise the wind for clearing a part of the Recreation Ground for football, &c. A concert and a farce by the Dramatic Club will be the bill of fare. __ ' The sausage-making project mentioned in o;y laat has dropped through for the present. The Messrs.- Bonny castle will, however, be happy to meet anyone interested on Friday week at the Town Hall. I hear of several people looking for basiaeßß sites in tho township. Strange to say, although there are somewhere about 1,200 sections, good locations are scarce. The way the township was laid out showed want of foresight. In ' the city of the future every street running east and west will be interoeoted by the railway, necessitating level crossings. The north and south streets are cut in ttvo j by the river, and the Mountain Road, which j will no doubt be the main thoroughfare, as at present, will be spoilt by the proximity of the railway. Perhaps this is looking too far ahead,, but it is the business of the founders of cities to consider the probable requirements of the future. There is one matter that will be a source of embarrassment in the near future, and that is the towa bridge.
