LIQUID FUEL FOR IRONCLADS.
The Russian Mincer of Marino (it is stitod in Broad Ai roto) has ordered liquid fuel furnaces to bo fitted to the irunclad Teheßiue, now under course of completion at Sobastopol. The decision is ore o£ a very important character, siace, v though liquid fuel has been app "ed to vesjels of fai-ly largo dimensions, this Is the fiist time the use of it has been attempted on ironclads. The Tchesme belongs to the fleet of heavy ironclads Russia is now building for the Black Sea. Three are already 'acnchod, aad three more a>-e to be constructed al no distant date. The Tchesrou, like the Sioopo, launched a few weeks a^o, lus a displacement of over 10,000 tons, and carries 16in of armour. She is therefore a vessel of the fi.st rank, and if l : quiJ f* .-1 can : >e successfully used on board of he I*,1 *, there is every reason to believe thai corl wiU disappear from the furnaces of the Black Sea Fleet. That I'qnid fuel can be employed on mercan./'e steamers of lar,;e dimensions is a well-known fact. It is regularly used by between 200 and 300 s earners in Russia," according to Mr. Marvin's ".England aa a Petroleum Power," and some of those vessels are nearly 300 Ft lon j. Over a thousand loco motives and stationary engines in Russia a'sj burn "nothing else bat_-l : qn»d fuel. Therefore, it is pretty clear that petroleum makes a useful fuel, and that as a heating n^entit has taken a regular place after coal and wood. , , On the Caspian Sea the Russhn Admiralty has used nothing but liquid fujl for its flep't there for the last fifteen years. TLhat fleet, however, consists only of gunboats and small transports. In the Black' Sea it has applied liquid fuel to two or three torpedo boats, and latterly some steamers, built at St. Petersburg for the Oxus, have been fitted with petroleum furnaies. The Government now seems to consider the timo ripe for further developments. The best types of furnaces ia usi in the Caspian have been called upon to yi-sld collectively the best design for the. Tchesme, and in due coarse the Russian Government will solve one way or the other the debated question whether liquid fuel is sjperior to cod on board men-of-war. The advantages claimed by Russian practice are defiued by Mr. Marvin as follows :—: — "Liquid fuel can De turned on or off like gas, thus dispensing with stoking or banked fires ; it is clean and emits no Bmoke. A ton of liquid fuel can do the work of twp or three tons of coal, occupying at the same time, bulk for bulb, about half the space ; and tlrs tcears that either the vessel can go two or three ' times as far wi.hout stopping to coal, or utMise'th" bunker space for ta-go pur^osas. In this manner 1000 tons of oil not ooly goes asf^r as 2500 toas of coal (a cording to th^ type of fuiaaoo used), but up only the bunter space of SCJ or 60 j toas, and a'lows tie balance of 2000 tons to be applied to passenger oc cargo purposes." in the case of Russia' there is one more advantage which has probably influenced the Minister of Marine .more than any of the foregoing — in fact, that by vain? liquid fuel in the Black Sea, Russia wou'd render li3rself independent oE English coal.
